Engaging people through powerful storytelling is a skill worth developing.

Most of us aren’t born with that skill.  We need to develop it.

Simply put, if you start with content that interests people and tell your story in an engaging way, you’re well on your way.

Whether you’re selling a product or just chatting with friends it’s important.

People are drawn to great storytellers.  How are your storytelling skills?  How can you tell?

One way is to just watch how engaged your audience is.  Do they appear interested?  Or are they daydreaming?  Do they ask you questions wanting to know more?

Think of your own experiences as a listener.

  • What has engaged you?
  • What’s bored you?
  • What can you learn from your own experience?
  • When others tell you about a great story they heard, what was it about the story that kept them engaged?

Tell a story that reveals information that interests your audience.

Share “behind the scenes” information so your audience reacts: “I didn’t know that!”

Tell the story in a narrative way, making your audience feel like they’re with you.  They experience what you experience.

You can’t always drop the names of famous people, but you might share stories about people your viewers know of.
