What Do Viewers Want?

When it comes to our audience, we have a tendency to assume they think like us.  That in news and information, they want what we want.

That’s why researching your audiences is so important.  The assumptions we make are often wrong.

For more than three decades, we’ve researched various market places — from New York to Sydney, Australia to learn viewers want.  We ask questions about the issues they want covered as well as how they want them presented.

We also used technology to get second-by-second information about what keeps viewers engaged and what bores them.

The viewer comments in the video are actual comments from several years ago that I voice over.  Most of the issues are still important to viewers today.

What Do Viewers Want?:  Takeaways

  • Investigate where tax money goes.
  • Investigate the quality of education.
  • Reveal crime trends to keep viewers safe.
  • Reveal what “special interest” group are up to.
  • Take the bias out of coverage so it will be fair and balanced.

Another major issue is the need to provide balance so the news isn’t entirely negative.  More and more viewers are jumping ship from newscasts because they feel “beaten down” from the steady diet of negative news.  So, for example, when crime rates go down, take the opportunity to celebrate the good news.
